CE certificates for gas torches: a checklist for EU importers
Short answer. Gas torches sold in the EU fall under the Gas Appliances Regulation (EU) 2016/426 and are normally tested to EN 521. Before you import, check that the certificate names your supplier, lists the exact models you are buying, covers the right gas and countries, is still valid, and comes with a production-conformity module and an EU declaration of conformity.
Which rules apply
Portable torches that burn butane or propane are appliances burning gaseous fuels, covered by Regulation (EU) 2016/426 (often called the GAR). The usual harmonised standard is EN 521, which covers portable vapour-pressure LPG appliances. Conformity is assessed by a notified body, typically through an EU type-examination (Module B) followed by a module that covers production.
Seven checks before you place an order
Certificate holder and manufacturer
The company on the certificate should be the factory you are buying from. Both of our EU certificates name Zhejiang Zhentanzhe Intelligent Electronics Co., Ltd. as holder and manufacturer.
Notified body
Look up the notified body number in the European Commission's NANDO database and confirm it is designated for Regulation (EU) 2016/426.
Model list
A certificate covers only the models it names. If your order includes a model that is not listed, or a variant with a different nozzle, tank or handle, it needs its own assessment.
Gas category and countries
Check the gas (butane, propane), the appliance category and the destination countries. Our propane certificate GK 007996 001 lists propane, direct pressure, for all EU member states.
Validity date
Certificates expire. Make sure the date covers your selling period, not just the shipment date.
Test report
Ask for the test report number on the certificate and a copy of the report. It shows what was tested and against which edition of the standard.
Production module and declaration
A type-examination certificate confirms the tested sample. Several certificates say plainly that they do not imply assessment of series production. Ask which production-conformity module applies and request the EU declaration of conformity for your models.
Your duties as importer
Under the regulation, the importer's name and contact address must appear on the appliance or, where that is not possible, on the packaging or an accompanying document. Instructions and safety information must be in the language of the country of sale. Plan this into your packaging artwork early.
