Sourcing butane torches from China: questions to ask a supplier
Short answer. Ask for the business licence and certificates in the same company name, the exact model list on each certificate, samples of the models you will buy, MOQ and lead time per model in writing, how torches are shipped without gas, and whether you or an inspector can visit the factory.
Is this the factory?
Many listings for butane torches come from trading companies. That is not a problem in itself, but you should know who makes the torch. Ask for the business licence and compare the company name with the name on the certificates and test reports. Ask for the factory address and whether you can visit or send an inspector.
What does each certificate cover?
A certificate number on a product page is not enough. Ask for the certificate itself and read its model list. Models outside the list are not covered, even if they look alike. Check the validity date and the issuing body, and ask for the test report.
Can I test samples of the exact models?
Order samples of the models and colors you will sell. Fill them with the gas sold in your market, light them repeatedly, check the flame lock and the base, and drop-test the retail packaging.
What are MOQ and lead time, per model?
Get MOQ, unit price and lead time for each model and each option (color, logo, packaging) in writing. A single MOQ for the whole catalog usually hides extra costs for custom work.
How will the torches ship?
Torches must ship empty. Butane is a dangerous good, and a supplier that offers to ship filled torches by express is a supplier to avoid.
What packaging and labelling do you provide?
Agree on retail box artwork, warnings, instructions in your market's language, your importer details and carton marks before production starts.
How do you handle defects?
Ask how the factory checks goods before packing, what happens if your inspection finds a problem, and how replacement parts are supplied.
