Why won't my butane torch light?

From the PropaneTorchs sales and engineering team. Updated 2026-10-15.

Short answer. Usually the tank is empty, the gas is too cold, the torch was lit straight after refilling, or the nozzle is blocked. Check those in order before suspecting the igniter.

Checks in order

  1. Is there gas? Refill and try again.
  2. Is it cold? Butane loses pressure near 0 °C; warm the torch to room temperature.
  3. Did you just refill? Wait one to two minutes for the gas to settle.
  4. Is the gas valve open? Turn the flame dial towards the larger setting.
  5. Is the nozzle clean? Let it cool and brush away debris.
  6. Does the igniter spark? If you see no spark at all, contact the seller rather than taking the torch apart.
